Without Tom Cruise, a Performable “Mission Impossible”

The Chicago Symphony, as a Thanksgiving gift, has just released a “live performance” of the theme music from “Mission Impossible.”

Here is the June 17, 2023, video featuring Gene Pokorny as the tuba soloist. The conductor is Riccardo Muti:

  1. That was wonderful Dr. Stein. It’s not often the tuba gets such a prominent place and this was great fun to watch and listen to. I love that the conductor stepped aside to highlight the entire orchestra and their skill and enjoyment performing this piece.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it, Deb. They don’t play music like that too often, but everyone enjoyed it. Yes, conductors sometimes do that, though they usually stay on the podium and just stop conducting for a while. Ravel’s “Bolero” has sections of repetition that often allows them to just watch. Have a happy holiday!

  2. Such a joy! Thanks for adding to our family’s Thanksgiving entertainment. 🥰

  3. What a treat to start my Thanksgiving Day! “Mission Impossible” is one of my favorite action movie series. I must say, though, that watching Tom Cruise in action sure adds a punch to the musical score 😀 A wonderful Thanksgiving Day to you and your family <3

  4. This is so fun! Love the rendition and turning things upside down by having a tuba in the front row. Such a treat!

  5. Love this one! My jazz dance class choreographed an incredibly fun and fast routine for this music, though the arrangement sounded a bit flashier with a louder base beat. The CSO orchestration sounds slightly different than the 1996 movie score. Which do you like best?

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it, Evelyn. I am the only person in the world who hasn’t seen the “Mission Impossible” movies, though I did see a few of the TV shows thousands of years ago. I appreciate that the CSO offered their version as a Thanksgiving treat, but I also felt the lack of energy you noticed. I doubt that they gave the piece much rehearsal time. Of course, the conductor’s background is not in the area of movie scores, though he has conducted Enrico Morricone, a prolific Italian film score composer.
